Why is my gas guage reading full when my car really isnt?

The past 2 times I have put gas in my car,it hasnt been filling. I wait until Im on empty then went to fuel up. The pump will start clicking (to tell me Im full) but whe I get into the car the guage is barley pass half a tank. What could cause this? I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS
