Why is my Desire HD saving contacs on google, and not on phone?

When I save a new number it is saved in google, what is that?? Why not on phone memory or on sim card. It is very confusing. And what is facebook for HTC sense, in detail please. I would like to link this with my girlfriend, but when I search for, I can not find her anywhere ?? I would be very grateful
