So I have a 1985 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Brougham with a 3.8L V6
The car has run for quite a while now without too many problems but lately it randomly will not start. It doesn't happen all the time and it's always when I least expect it. It will just crank and crank and crank and crank but not fire up.
If I let it sit for a few mins. or keep cranking on it the car eventually starts to sputter and slowly starts as it smells strongly of gas and I even see some smoke coming out of the tailpipe sometimes when it does this.
It's really odd and totally random when this happens but it has me a little worried as I can't say for sure what the problem might be. Obviously it's getting gas since I can smell it strongly in the car once it starts.
Usually this happens at night. Last night I got in the car and turned the key forward without trying to start it yet and I could hear the fuel pump whining as if it was working etc. But when I turned it all the way forward it just cranked and cranked. Not sure if my letting it sit there forward somehow flooded the engine?
Any ideas from you guys would be greatly appreciated. I hope I made enough sense.
