Why is my car not idling correctly?

I own a 1993 Buick Regal Custom with a 3.8 engine. I believe the engine has about 100,000 miles on it (my car says 180,000 because the previous owner put this engine in it.) Anyway, the problem is when it's idling, the RPMs jump and down. I wanna say from like 800 to 1,200.

If I put the car in drive, and hold the break just a little bit, the car wants to lurch forward, as it would with the RPMs jumping up and down. One weird thing though - if I rev my engine up, after they drop almost all the way back down you hear a cracking noise. Not loud, but like dropping a can of pop on the floor - IE. Loud enough for you to notice when it does it, hood up or not.

Anyway (I'm 20) and my dad is an ex mechanic who said he doesn't have the time or want to help me figure out what's wrong with it. "If it's still running, don't worry out, that piece of crap car isn't worth spending time or money on." I'd just like some ideas of what could be wrong with it, because I'd like it to run right for the best gas mile and such.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you! in advanced!
