Why is my car engine so loud?

there are no lights that pop inside my car stating that something is wrong, but when i put my car in idle the engine gets really loud and the rpm goes up until i take it out of idle again. Sometimes when i start my car it just gets loud.
sounds like a race car or something and the car is a 97 buick regal
