Why is my brand new xbox 360 wired headset not working?

Brand new just brought about 10 minutes ago from my local blockbusters store. Well. I just returned a faulty headset for my xbox 360 and traded it for a new one. The old one worked fine but it made noises when I talk and even when I didnt. I tried to clean the plug in part and the hole where it is insterted on the controller with I cotton bud and some water. It still didnt work. I went to blockbuster about 10 minutes ago, just got in to find I can hear people, But other people cant hear me. It shows that theres a mic plugged in, but when I talk or make any sound it doesnt pick it up. (The symbol doesnt flash/light up). I have no family settings so its nothing to do with that. The switch on the controller is not on Mute. In preferences>voice the mute box is not ticked. I dont know whats wrong. Its brand new headset. Could it be the controller? the old headset worked fine in it apart from the noises, or am I doing something wrong?

Answerers 1&2: Thanks for trying to help but it has not worked :(
well im going to take it back tomorrow and if it breaks then Im going to have to buy a wireless one :(
 
Go to preferences then voice and select play through both it might work but i'm not sure. (you might have to get a wireless headset, my friend did). Good Luck! :-)
 
U know how the end of the wire is shaped like an L? Make sure the wire is facing upwards towards u.

Or maybe u should put the part where u talk into it really close to ur mouth.
