why is my boyfriend so nasty to me?

i have been with my boyfriend for nearly 4 years, we have two beautiful children together an i love him so much, but its the same thing all the time. when we first got together it was great i got pregnant and when i was about 6 months pregnant he hit me and he has done it a few times since the last time i had him arrested for it and he has never done it since. i think it scared the crap out of him. now things are really bad between us we don't even live together he keeps putting it off and when we have silly little arguments he makes it ten times worse he calls me all the names you could think of and has me in tears which i think he enjoys coz he gets so cocky and laughs at me i have lost all my confidence i have no friends left. he threatens to break up with me all the time and i go running back and i don't know why i know i deserve better but i love him and i just want to try and salvage something of this relationship if we can i feel like he uses me sometimes i feel worthless most of the time he does this and i have told him this but he always manages to turn it around like its my fault and have me chasing him im scared if i leave him im going to be lonely. do u think we can salvage this
