Why is my 2000 Ford Explorer making a humming sound?

The humming just starts randomly when I'm driving. The sound goes away a little when I step on the gas. If I step on the gas harder the sound stops completely. If I don't step on the gas and the truck is not moving the humming will get louder, then when the sound stops the explorer vibrates a little and turns off. If anyone can tell me what the problem may be I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
 
I would check your belt and pullies. Thts what it sounds like to me. Either ur belt is old and loose or a pulley is going bad.. Open hood and try a spray like WD40 while the motor is running. If you spray what is humming and it stops then most like that is what is has gone bad

In the interest of not having the Fire Department have to come for a special visit...try to avoid spraying exceptionally flammable substances (like WD-40) on a running engine.

I was going to say the cold weather was causing the spedo cable to taughten-up, but the symptomology is backwards (it would become louder the faster you went).
