I just bought a 1972 Monte Carlo and money's been put into it...new short block 350, pop-up pistons, comp cam, shaved heads, etc. I know I need new manifold gaskets, and I'm intending on replacing the distributor with an HEI distributor, but could that be the cause of the backfiring that I'm getting??

if you have had comp cam- you are getting more fuel into the engine- shaved heads more compression!
maybe a back fire is normal for the cam you have as it will have changed the way your valves open!
I would tune up the carb to suit and do what you said with the distributor!

I doubt if the dizzy is the problem if the engine is running fine -bar the back fire! if your engine is missfiering - jumpy- then I would say dizzy!

Do you have point or electronic ignition?
Change the point!
