The Blunt Ugly Truth

A question I've always wondered about contemporary music is why lounge/chill/downtempo is not popular as other music genres, and I'm very interested to hear your theories. The ONLY places I've ever heard downtempo/chill-out music being played in the US--and where I find other likeminded fans--is in semi-trendy clubs and bars in places like NYC and DC.
Why isn't this type of music more mainstream popular? Have most people never heard of it? Is it because this music is more associated with "background" music? Or do you think it just plain sucks? As an example of a typical downtempo song, I've linked Mo Horizon's "Prince Charles' Latest Affair".
