Why is it that i can't breathe when facing strong wind?

Ok so last week I was riding my bike to work, it was a stormy day with fairly strong wind blowing. I turned a corner and then the wind was blowing straight at me, face on and I was unable to take in a breath of air. I started to gasp like I was drowning, I managed to take in a breath by shoving my head back down inside my jumper. This also happens if I stick my head out of the window when going along in a car where the wind is blowing strong. Why is this happening? Can I get it to stop, as it is worrying me as I nearly suffocated the day I was on my bike.
