Is it becuase of the high pitch and it hurts thier ears? Has anyone else noticed that they *the dogs* all seam to start at the same time and then all stop at the exact same time?

its not because it hurts their ears,
its just that they mistaken it as another dog's howl. so they howl back
its spelled HOWL btw.

like they said, it can hurt there ears, they could be possibly trying to drown out the noise, but idk how smart dogs are

Yes, dogs howl because the siren hurts their extremely
sensitive ears. Also, it may sound like another dog howling
to them, so they join in!

dogs hear things at a higher frequency than us, so fire sirens probably are killing their ears. no, they dont start and stop at the same time, its just whenever they hear the fire engine. hope this helps.

It doesn't hurt their ears, it sounds like another dog howling. So the neighborhood dogs howl back at this big loud impressive dog because it said "hello". It's a way of seeing who's got territory around you. They all start and stop at the same time, because they all hear the siren at the same time. It's also "howl" and "blares".

The only thing that I can think of is it sounds like another dog.
I used to think it hurt their ears, but now I'm not so sure.
Our dogs Shadow and Dio never howled at the siren until we got our newest edition (Benson) in December. (We've had Shadow four years and Dio three and we've lived in the same house.)
He first started howling at the noon whistle, now he howls at the sirens too.
He could be laying down, sleeping, the minute the whistle goes off, his head comes up and he will listen to it. He doesn't start howling until the whistle is dying down and almost done.
I guess when Shadow and Dio seen and heard Benson howl they thought "OH! So that's what we're supposed to do!" and decided to join him in a chorus.

dogs have very sensitive ears. that sound is loud and it hurts their ears. when i say hurt, i don't mean as in damaging hurt. my dogs are like that even when i call their names out loud, they'll start howling.
