Why is it a bad idea to discuss politics and/or religion?

Those are two topics that everyone takes seriously, other than the uninformed and ignorant.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who would change their religious or political ideas because someone pointed out something wrong with their beliefs. That can cause major animosity because people will not change their religious or political beliefs at the drop of a hat.

Religion and politics are two of the main things that shape our world and people spend a lot of time deciding which religion/political group to support, and by others undermining their choices by trying to change their views, it will inevitably lead to an uncomfortable situation.

Because your friends an family may see differently on the subject, If either is brought up and people disagree then people are shocked that they are friends or related to these people and had no idea they saw differently.

It causes people to get very defensive and angry because people feel very passionate about these items and try to get others to see their way.

Because they are the most controversial.

Go to Polls and Surveys and ask "What is your religion?" or "Are you a democrat or a republican?"

Then see how many answers you get. Unless you know that everyone at the table is christian then there's no need to worry, but all it takes is one very anti-religion atheist at the table to start a huge fight. Or similarly at a very low-religious group, all it takes is one highly devoted christian to start an argument.

Same goes with politics.

Because you can get into big arguments with family and friends who you care about and with those whom you don't know well (which is not something you should ever do unless asked; becuase those people will judge you based on your answers).

Just be careful and remember that as great as it is (or not) when you find someone who agrees with you, the odds of having even a minor difference in terms of religious belief or political leanings are very high. You could both be christians (for example) but belong to different denominations. You both could be democrats but one of you could be a conservative "blue dog" and the other a hardcore liberal.
