Why is financial aid so unfair?

I come from a upper middle class family. I do not understand why Fafsa is geared towards only helping out those who come from low(er) income families.
thanks for your responses. I guess I should have stated this more clearly:

Just because my parents make money doesn't mean I have the luxury of having them pay for my education. Their income in no way determines my standing as a student.
 
Because they need it even more than you do. They give help to students who otherwise would have no option to go to college. If your parents can't even keep food on the table, how can you pay for college? Look for scholarships and grants that aren't need based, but that are based on grades or citizenship. Maybe you can find something that you do qualify for. Talk to the financial aid office at the school you are looking at.
 
Because they have no way to pay for it and you do? Not that I think it's in any way sane or fair that university costs about $20,000.
