Why is discussing race in public so dirty?

People are comfortable with talking about anything else. Strangers will discuss extremely personal topics like religion and politics openly and I've even had conversations about different sex acts with total strangers but when race comes up no one wants to say anything.

Would more discussion decrease the amount of online venting and *gag* trolling?
