why is carl's jr named hardee's in the mid-west?

i'm from california so i'm used to carl's jr. i'm visiting the mid-west and i found it to be hardee's. they both have the same yellow happy star logo. carl's jr has the green burrito and hardee's has the red burrito. same company, right? why the difference?
 
That's a good question, random it may be, but a good observation. I don't know the real answer, but I've always known that they were the same, just never wondered about it.
 
The Carl Jr chain, founded by Carl Karcher, merged with the Hardee's restauraunt chain in 1997. They just kept the Hardee's name.
