why is buying bicycle spokes such an expensive hassle?

First of all the people at the bike shop want to charge 50 dollars to determine the correct spoke Lenght . Then they want me to buy 100 spokes for each size needed,[ the rear spokes are shorter] the spokes on the drive are shorter still, that 3 different sizes. And 228 spokes left over, and comes to 210 dollars
