Why is Apple making things with batteries that are hard to replace?

For years already, Apple has been making iPods with batteries that can't be easily replaced by the end user. More recently, I've heard that their next planned generation of laptops will also have batteries that can't be easily replaced. I've heard them say the batteries should last so long that by the time you'll want to replace them, you'll probably want a new computer anyway, but it still seems like you should be able to replace the battery in a laptop easily. It seems like Apple wants total control over the computer experience, to the point of forcing you to have Apple repair things, but even this doesn't make much sense to me.
