Why I prefer 2005's B-movies to blockbusters

I don't know about you, but I've found that the really big blockbusters this year have been disappointed. Every summer, Hollywood always promises movies with fantastic special effects, unique plots, attractive casts, etc, but what it really boils down to is usually 5 big budget $100 million 12A movies, designed to be family friendly and push very few boundaries, like with The Island and Fantastic 4.

The producers always boast about getting the best directors but then restrict them in terms of bad language, sex/nudity and violence

That's why I am far more entertained with B-movies like Unleashed starring Jet Li, when I saw that, I loved it!

You knew exactly what you were getting: full-on kung fu, great set pieces with multiple fighters, no long breaks between the action or plot exploration (a real word?), the excellent camerawork during the pit-fight and fight between Jet Li and the guy in White, etc. It was 18-rated and proud of it!

These movies promise NO bull$hit. That's why I'm looking forward to Four Brothers, Serenity, Night Watch and Transporter 2. You can just switch your brain to neutral and enjoy.

I'm not saying Hollywood shouldn't drastically change their blockbuster movies, but it's clear that they are compromised by their own rampant commercialism and it seems only the low budget movies are any fun ;)
