Why/How would a lifeless/inanimate object, the very first life form sense

its environment/pain? No matter how the chemical structure of that object is...No matter how different that composition is from an inanimate stone,
what is it inside that object with life, that would have made it to feel/sense it's environment?
Why would it do it by itself?
Would it have been some external force, that made it to sense the environment?
(Point is- If it doesn't sense it wouldn't have to feel the pain. Why would it do something that causes it pain. To save its' composition?.. That might not be; because it might not have developed memory by then, that stores its previous experiences)
