Why have my fish died?

I started with five fish to begin with about 2 months ago in my 5 gallon freshwater tank. As of today I'm down to one. About three weeks in, the first to go were my two molly's, a black and silver one, within hours of each other. I had my roommate take care of them while i went home for the weekend. He followed everything that i told him to do supposedly and when i got back they had both just died. He did notice that the silver molly didn't have much of an appetite the day before. I had him take care of the rest over spring break. The day after i had gotten back one of two of my tiger fish was dead. This fish showed signs of possibly being killed by the other fish because his tail had been bitten up pretty good and there was some blood coming out of his poop hole. I once again let my roommate take care of the tiger fish and the sucker fish i still had left this weekend. They were both still alive this morning, but when i got back from class at 1 today my sucker fish was laying on his side. He was still breathing and tried to swim around a little. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with him and he began swimming around again weirdly and then just died. He is usually a dark almost black color, but today he was a little pale. My roommate has had many fish while growing up so he should know how to take care of them. Why is it that they all died once i got back? Could it be the pH, ammonia, or nitrates? Is it most likely his fault? Is it mine? What do i do now since i only have the one tiger fish left?
