Why don't Toyota and Honda vehicles have decent leg room for tall people?

I'm 6'5" and I've wanted either a Honda or Toyota for years now because of their reputations and resale values, but everything I've test driven has next to no leg room. It's like they stick the driver's seat as close to the steering wheel as possible.

I've test driven a Tacoma, Accord, Avalon, 4Runner, CR-V, Pilot, you name it. No matter how I adjust each seat, my knees and the steering wheel are always pressed up into my stomach. My sister and her husband just bought a used 2008 Toyota 4Runner with the big V8 and when I drove it, I felt like I was riding in a lifted Honda Civic.

We're talking next to know leg room and it's a hulking V8 for crying out loud. I don't get it. I currently drive a little 4 cylinder Ford Ranger and it has more leg room then I could ever need even though it's a tiny pickup truck. Can someone please explain this to me? Am I just stuck with driving Fords?
