Starbucks and Wegmans put their employees first. Why? They do this because if employees are treated well, then those same employees will treat customers well in return. I can honestly say that every time I have been in a Starbucks or Wegmans I was always treated extremely well, which is partly why I enjoy going to these places. I also could care less if I come in second as a customer because I'm only there for maybe an hour tops, while employees are there for a lot longer each day.
So why don't more companies do this? I currently work at Kmart until I graduate college and get my degree at a real job. I don't mind working there in the meantime, it's just they honestly do not treat us employees all that well, which causes me to be not as polite as I could be to customers. If my managers treated me with more respect, I'd show more respect in return. It's just human nature.
I should also add that I at one time chose not to turn my register light on until I got everything settled, which would only take 30 seconds. I just had to find large bags for my register because there were none nearby. So I looked under each register very quickly in search of large bags for the customers. My manager saw me doing this and said "Get back to your register. Customers always come first. You can look for bags later" even though the large bags are a way to help out the customers with their large items. Trust me, I wasn't getting these bags for my own personal use. It's for the customers use. So for my manager to speak to me in this manner was unnecessary, but her comment alone at the start of the day was enough to make me treat people not as well as I could. It just puts me in a bad mood when I'm treated poorly.
