Why don't humanity use existing technology to resolve all their economic woes!?

farm land could be freed up for food production rather than spent on fuels, hydrogen can replace dangerous aircraft fuels reduce pollution ,eradicate tanker spillages ,enviromental health issues, costs, etc etc etc ......so why?
