Why don't car manufacturers make a Diesel/Electric hybrid?

If the toyota prius can be so efficient with a gasoline/electric hybrid engine, a diesel power plant combined with electric would move it into the next level of efficiency!
maybe over the ellusive 100mpg.....
 
The problem is the only way to get 100 mpg is to fudge conversion factors for plug in cars. A 100% efficient (ie break the second and third laws of thermo) would get a 2500 pound, areodynamicly near perfect car with a top speed of 65 mph would calculate out to just over 120 mpg. Put, if you traced back the power and fuel and total systems and applied the laws of thermo, a 100 mpg is not possible with the constraints listed above. Your only choice is to drop the weight, lower the top speed and make the car even more slippery in order to get the 100 mpg.
