Why don't all DVD- work in my player.?

I use cucu soft to make dvd from avi files. Some will play in my player some will not. I stopped using Memorex and went to tdk. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. And on my sisters they dont play at all. And my second question do you know of a free softwear like cucu because it is jerky sometimes when being played.
