Why doesn't the speedometer on my Honda Civic 2004 LXi work like it should?

My speedometer doesn't respond immediately. If I accelerate from 0 to 80km/h, the speedometer will slowly follow, after 10 seconds or so. Then, if I stop, it will take ages before the needle goes back to 0.
the RPM and odometer works as it should.

I tried swapping the whole speedometer unit, and everything works fine then. But is there any easy/inexpensive way to fix mine?

thanks

thanks for your quick reply. I would think that it's not the crankshaft, since the other unit I tried worked just fine? When you say replace the speedometer, do you mean the whole thing, or just the needle or something? Sorry, I don't know much about cars!

check the sensor attached to your crankshaft. it may not be relaying info in realtime to the speedometer. if it is not the sensor it is a problem in the speedometer itself and just needs to be replaced.
