Why doesn't my Windows Media Player not work?

When I click on a song, it plays and usually if I click on another song, it would stop the first and commence playing the new one.
For some reason, the player now puts the second song (and any after that) into the playlist.
I don't want that. When I click a song whiles it's in a folder, it should play and not be put into playlist.
Is there a setting I could tweak to fix this?
