Why Doesn't my PSP USB cable show up on my Mac OS X or my PC?

Whenever I connect my PSP to the computer, the USB thing that is supposed to be on the desktop never shows up. This might be the fact that i don't have a memory card but my friend doesn't have one and he can connect, or that is what he says. I know that you need to format the memory card to the PSP I can do that but why doesn't it show up on the screen? Oh and by the way I have the FIRST PSP the BLACK one
