Why does Windows Media Player use between 80% to 100% of my CPU usage?

When I try to watch a movie, it is laggy or freezes. Sometimes, it plays no problem. I don't get it.
I've got an HP Pavilion 544n. I bought it in 2003
It has an Intel Celeron processor with 2.00GHz and 1.24 gigs of RAM
I have been having this problem for about 5 months now. Before, it ran no problem. I have even done a system restore. Does too many system restores make this happen?
The only thing in the background is my antivirus

there might be a virus in ur pc which is using ur cpu usage.
check if u can start ur taskbar if it doesnt start update ur antivirus

lol you need a new computer..
either that or you can adjust media player to a lower priority from task manager or use another media player.....
make sure no background task while using wmp. no internet explorer, games in background, nada

media playing takes up alot of cpu usage. it's very demanding especialy on lower end computers with slower cpu's. theres alot of computations that need to take place to recreate the sound or movie. plus wmp is pretty big in it'self. but it's better than anything else out there. especial itunes and quicktime
