Why does the quarterback move his leg up before the ball is hiked?

Every time just before the ball is hiked, the quarterback moves one of his legs up. All of them seem to do it. What is the purpose of this move?

If the qb is under the center, then it is used to send one of the players in motion, either WR, TE, or RB. If in the shotgun it's used to either send a player in motion, or to signal the center that the are ready for the snap. It's hard to hear the qb if hes 5 yards behind you, and even then he could be audbling and talking to somone else, the easiest way to avoid this confussion is to just look for the leg to go up.

it's a timing mechanism. The leg rise is used by a lot of pocket passers because it helps them time when the ball is hiked so they can get ready to catch it, and move to the pocket position.

You were looking at the quarterback on the visiting team. The home team crowd typically makes a lot of noise when the visitors' quarterback is trying to call signals, so he will tell his team that the ball will be snapped on the third leg stamp. The home team quarterback can shut up the crowd by raising his hand.
