Just an observation, why do we allow the media (news, movies, tv shows, radio, even books, etc) to depict us in a particular negative and caricatured way? 30 years ago "Three's Company" epitomized what I'm talking about, and looking at what we have today, not much has really changed.
Gay dudes on TV are still depicted as catty, effeminate, boisterous, over-sexed, talking in a lisp while waving their hands animatedly. Very few gay dudes actually fall into that category, so why do we allow the media to depict us like that? Where is the outrage?
If African Americans were depicted in a negatively stereotyped way, there would be outrage, same with Latinos, Asians, Jews, Muslims, etc. Why do we not only allow these negative depictions, but actually celebrate them and, in some cases, perpetuate them ourselves?
Can we really be taken seriously by society when we can't even seem to take ourselves seriously?
Just something that's been bugging me for a long time. My contention is that Jack from "Will and Grace" is our "Watermelon/kool-aid drinking ne'erdowell" or our "buck toothed martial artist who says his Rs and Ls reveresed" or our "fat and lazy Mexican" or our "money-grubbing elite banker" or our "fanatical religious terrorist".
Again, these stereotypes are offensive to those groups and they fight them on a daily basis, while we just sit back and allow the networks and the movie studios to depict us all as Jack, from either Will and Grace or Three's Company.
