Why does the fuel gauge on my Toyota Rav4 say it's full when it's 5 gallons under

capacity (i think)? I have a 2010 Toyota Rav4 4-cyl AWD Base. According to the specs on Toyota's website, the fuel tank capacity is 16 gallons. Today, I went to the gas station to buy gasoline. I bought $45 worth, and at today's prices in Brooklyn, NY, got me a little over 11 gallons. When i went to fill up for gasoline, the needle was on empty, not a little before, but on the empty line exactly. I would think that means less than a gallon left. Well, after I was done filling up, to my surprise, the needle went to past the full line, like the tank was overflowing. I don't understand that. There should be room for about 5 more gallons of gas, which is a significant amount. Someone please explain this to me.
Made a mistake, actually bought $40 worth of gas. But it was still a little over 11 gallons nonetheless.
Jack, that may be the case, but 5 gallons is a significant amount to be unaccounted for
