i dont get why the BBC feels the need to compete..all it needs to do is to keep the government sweet enough to allow it to raise licence fees and the best way to do that is to make good quality TV because that's what the chattering classes like. they're not competing with anyone for money as it's handed to them on a plate

can anyone tell me why they need to advertise?

They have to spend all the money we pay them for our TV licence on something. It's a bit like local councils, near the end of the tax year they re-cover roads that were done a few months before hand just so they can spend all the money in the budget so they get the same amount the following year!
Call me cynical but......

I want to know why they are competing with the commercial sector at all.

Case in point.

They spend hundreds of millions competing for the rights to show Premier and Champions league football when other commercial stations are already bidding. So why does the BBC need to get into a bidding war? I dont give a c... whether the game I watch is on Channel 1 or Channel 3 .......... so why waste millions of pounds like this.

They could do with taking a leaf out of the Australian version of the BBC which is how it should be managed in my HO.
