why does sand break electronics?

yesterday at the beach i dropped my mp3 player in the sand and now it sounds retarded. what did the sand do to it?
 
well i had the same problem with my camera.you see what probably happened was those tiny grains of sand got inside the mp3 player and they will not allow it to function properly. the best thing you could do is maybe see if you have some type of warranty to replace it or open it up and get the sand out any way possible.
