Why does putting an emulator on the psp require you to pull your hair out?

I just got a used PSP. It apparently has the dreated AT-082 motherboard. Whatever.

What I don't understand is, why is it sooo complicated just putting an emulator on? (Okay, so I know why) I just want to get this straight.

First (I have firmware version 3.4) You have to downgrade to 1.5 or less.
2. Then I don't know.
3. Upgrade again, to a custom version?
4. Pray to god it works.
5. Optional. If not, you need to get one of those Pandora batteries and/or Magic Memory Sticks which will... do what exactly?
6. Then you can do whatever, right?

Also, is it possible now, for the 082's to be downgraded? The last forum I read was 2 years old.
I understand that it's designed to be a pain, but if it's not cut out for it, why is Sony, of all people, selling old PS1 classics for the PSP?
