why does my printer print word starter documents too bold?

I recently downloaded Microsoft Office Starter and when I print my documents they come out very dark and bold. The ink smears on the paper. I changed the font type and size to Arial or Arial Narrow and it makes no difference. I've had the same printer for 2-3 years. I didn't have this problem would Microsoft Works. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
