my 2001 pontiac grand am se, (automatic) sometimes stalls when i try to reverse on idle or with just a little jab of accelleration, the engine cuts off. but this only happens when i start to reverse the car- is this normal?

I forgot to mention -
The car stalled when i was reversing up a small hill, and only tapping the acceleration.
It then started up straight away and reversed fine, but it has happened a few times now.
