Why does my Playstation 2 not recognize my USB drive ?

I have tried a 4gb, 2gb, 1gb and 100 mb usb drive. Neither one is recognized by the PS2. I tried formatting each drive as NTFS and FAT32, and the results were the same every time. The PS2 is new, a slimline model.
Any constructive feedback is welcomed.
