Why does my new iMac keep freezing?

I bought an iMac no more than 2 months ago and it's been working great up until about 3-4 weeks ago. It's really slow when opening programs and freezes when we use the internet. I suspect it's because my bf has been uploading movies and photographs (many photographs, he's a photographer) onto it, but he says that's not the case and we've got to upgrade the RAM. What do you think?
When I'm on the internet, it sometimes freezes, like the pinwheel icon will come up and I can't do anything except turn the computer off.
It says that I have 71.75 GB available on the HD.

I'd guess there's some other problem. If it's a brand new iMac, you should have plenty of RAM to run any recent applications. If you have applecare I would recommend taking it into them. They may have to replace some parts.

Hi, that is weird, a new iMac should not be having this problem.

I doubt u could have a shortage of ram or hard disk space on a new Mac.

Mac OS X is a Unix like system and should not be behaving like this.

As for the internet, try clearing out your cache and cookies, history and stuff.

I would suggest u run a memory test to test your ram for any damage. You should take the machine back to Apple and have them test it for u.

Edit: I just read your question again, OS X isn't pure Unix so there r some freezes and crashes to be expected though rarely. Applications opening slowly and random freezes does sound like bad ram to me. Try running a scan on your hard disk for bad sectors.

Have u run or installed any program or some script from some random website or given some unknown application administrator access? There is a very slight chance your OS could have corrupted and may need a reinstall. Check your hardware first though.

Good Luck and take care!

You might even try repairing disk permissions ... something you ought to do every week or two anyway. Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility Click on the hard drive icon on the left and then click on Repair Permissions.

When my cable internet slowed way down a few months ago, they had me reboot the cable modem and that took care of the problem. Call your cable company for directions to reboot your particular modem, if you don't know how to do that.

Make sure your hard drive isnt full. You can tell when you open a window (it will say something like 123.64 GB available).

If you have tons of space, RAM might be the issue, but if the internet is causing problems, maybe its your internet connection's fault, and not the computer.

When you say "freezes", do you mean you cant do anything, or just the internet is slow?

Your Mac is still within the 90 day free support, call Apple. The spinning beachball is usually caused by processor intensive activity.

It also happens when there is some low memory management, this happens on my Mac that has 2 GB of RAM (the max unfortunately for my Mac). Look in Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) System Memory tab to see if there are any high amounts of page outs. If there is your Mac will run better with more RAM.

If RAM isn't an issue, running some basic troubleshooting won't hurt, it might even fix the problem.
