Why does my moms 1990 Chevy 1500 pickup stall when you put it in drive or reverse?

Ok, here is the deal. My mom has a 1990 Chevy 1500 Pickup and every time anyone is at a stoplight, puts it in drive, or reverse, the engine will sputter and stall. When you are at a stoplight you have to keep one foot on the brake and one foot one the gas while keeping the RPM's up just a little to keep it running. I was talking with my dad and he thinks it is the butterflies on the carburetor. He says they are not fully opening. Could this cause the truck to die? If so, can this be fixed at home? If not, any suggestions on what could cause it. Also the engine is (I think) a 5.0 V8

Seriously it probably needs a good tune up. Try changing your spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, air filter, all of that kind of stuff.
As far as the carburetor goes it could be messing up too. One thing you can try is getting a can of carburetor cleaner and spraying the hell out of the inside of it to clean up and loosen up any sticking parts. Get a bottle of some sort of gas treatment as well. I'd try all of that before i would try rebuilding or replacing the carburetor itself.
