why does my ford ranger have a real hard jerk going into gear?

ok i have a 1999 ford ranger 3.0L 4x4 with a 4 speed automatic and it has 70,000 miles on it and when it shifts from 2 to 3 gear it gives a real hard jerk then kicks in what could be wrong with it? and is there anything that i can do with out having it cost me a ton of money
