Why does my ford contour 98 eat to much gas?

I dont want to get ripped off at a mechanic shop for work I dont need.So what do I need to have done for a 98 ford contour that eats gas more than normal.And important things to maintain.If a good cheap mechanic is in the woodstock or mchenry county of illinois,then let me know please.No guesses or maybe's.Professional answers please.Thank you
