You have an amonia problem. You need to do a water change immediately. Replace about 3/4 of the water. Also, they sell tablets at pet stores that balance out the amonia. I would suggest getting some of those. Also, you need to add some live bacteria. This is sold in a bottle at the pet stores. This is why you have an amonia build up. There are no bacteria to kill the amonia. What kind of filter do you have? This also could have happened if you did a complete water change. When you do a water change you are supposed to leave some of the old water in there, because there should be bacteria build up already there.
It sounds like you need a bigger filter for that tank
