Why does my engine start up and sound like it's going to run and then die unless I...

...put some gas on the pedal? It stays started if I put a little gas on it after starting it and then ease back on the pedal very slowly. Could this be a suction leak in the fuel pump or a dying fuel pump? What else could it be? I'm in critical need of an oil change. That much is for certain. the mileage is like 240,000. I'm going to change the oil this week. Thanks for reading.

If when I turn the ignition key and the fuel pump feeds some gas, then I turn it back off and on again to feed twice as much and it starts fine- is that a fuel pump leak/bad fuel pump?
I don't think it's damaged because it can idle very very low. like when the engine is warm and you let it idle. it will idle extremely low with no problem whatsoever. it doesn't really die like that after you get it going after the first 10 seconds of start time.
