My dog, a 2 year old pitbull, a generally happy dog, unstressed, plenty of play time, spends large amounts of time every day sucking on a blanket and whining, does anybody have an idea as to the reason for this behavior.
im not concerned at all and he is happy, so it doesn't really matter. i am just curious

Your dog was never weaned properly. I dont know if there is much you can do about it now.... search for "Dog weaning" in google. You can also try spraying "bitter apple" spray on his blanket. This will get him to stop really quick! good luck!

Hi
My dog does the same. He is a Springer Spaniel. He sleeps with his blanket in his mouth as well as sucking his blanket and whining.
I spoke to the Vet and she said that it is down to being taken away from his mum too soon. We got him when he was 7 weeks old. Not sure whether or not it is true but the Vet was quite convinced it was this. He always does it now so i just put it down to habit.
Maybe you could phone your vet and ask them.

It probably started because he was taken away from the mom too soon. Now that he is 2 it more than like become a habit because he has been doing it for so long.

hes bored- hes stress realiving...- suckling it like its his moms nip nip- or trying to go to sleep...dont feel bad my dog suckles her thigh when trying to go to dreamland where all the imaginary dogs roam free and prosper
