why does my dirt bike only run with ether? [ 10 points to best answer ]!?

i have a 1989 honda xr100r 4 stroke. I can only start the bike by spraying ether [starting fluid] into the carb and it will run for about 5 seconds, after that it dies and I need to spray some more ether in order to start it again. what is wrong with it? 10 points 2 best answer
 
If it fires, you can probably rule out the ignition. Verify that you are getting gas to the carb by opening the float bowl drain screw. If gas or crap comes out, the carb probably needs cleaning. If you get nothing, then check the lines, filter (if applicable) and petcock screen for blockage. Also make sure there's no water in the tank and the petcock is on.
