why does my computer freeze when i video chat?

when i first got my laptop i could video chat perfectly on AIM and ooVoo.
Now the program will freeze when i try to chat on webcam with anyone. it works fine on MSN and different websites. how can i get AIM and ooVoo to run smoothly when i use my webcam or someone is using theirs.
