Why does my cat eat his shedded fur?

He's done this all this life I think.

Obviously I prevent him from doing this, but I'm curious why he attempts this in the first place.

It's only when I brush him, I wind up with a ball of fur, and he'll try to get at it and eat it.
 
My cat does the same, i think its because they still think they have to groom it so they start licking it, which makes it look as if they are trying to consume it. But heck im not a cat expert sorry ha.
