Why does my car not accelerate and making a funny noise?

I got on the freeway coming home from work. I literally could not accelerate past 50. The more I tried pressing on the gas, the funnier the sounds were from the engine, like a whizzing noise. My RPM also looked out of control, it was around five. Also, the temperature was closer to C.

I never had this problem. My car was fine when I went to work.

When I got off the freeway, everything looked like it returned to normal. Temperature was in the middle. But my RPM still seemed higher than normal when I accelerate.

I want/need to take it to the shop to get it looked at. Any advice on what the problem may be? Thank you VERY much.

Could be a sensor, usually related to the emissions system that can cause this... most sensor's cost between $30-$90 depending on your engine size/car/brand. Shops will easily charge triple the price of the actual part.

take it to a muffler shop ask them to check the catalytic converter it could be something else but i couldnt tell you unless a drove it im pretty sure that is your problem or the transmission depends on the sound does it change gears?
